Hair Loss Treatment
Hair growth has its own cycle, which normally lasts between 2 to 6 years, depending on the type of person you are (genetic disposition). Each strand of hair grows about 1 centimetre per month. There are approximately 100,000 strands of hair on an average person’s head, with 90% of them growing through various phases of the cycle, while the remaining 10% is at a “resting state”. In about 2 to 3 months, this 10% resting hair strands fall out, replaced by new growth. Human hair is made from a protein called keratin and the colour of your hair is determined by a chemical produced in the hair follicle called melanin.

Scary!
Most people lose 50 to 100 strands of hair daily, on the average. This rate of loss is to be considered as normal. It is only when you are losing more than a hundred strands per day that you should start to get worried. Hair loss can occur only in the head or in all parts of the body. When people talk of baldness, they usually refer to excessive hair loss from a person’s head. The medical term for hair loss is alopecia that is, losing enough hair that a person has visible thin patches of hair.
Hair loss usually affects adults only, normally starting from age 25. However, there are also cases of hair loss among teenagers and even children, which is no longer normal. Losing your hair can be particularly stressful and even embarrassing. This is more so in the case of women and teenage girls, who worry a lot about appearance. There are many causes of hair loss, but the usual culprits are taking certain types of medication, not eating the right kinds of foods (malnutrition or under nutrition), and sickness. There are today many kinds of hair loss treatments available, and most types of hair loss are easily diagnosed and treatable by a knowledgeable family doctor or a specialist, like a dermatologist.
